Privacy
Reading the site
Our analytics records the page viewed, time on the page, scroll depth, selected interactions, approximate screen size, referring domain and tags showing which shared link brought you here. We use these records to understand how the site is used. Each page load gets a random identifier that is sent with its reports and stored with the analytics record. Your browser holds it in memory for that page load. The analytics script does not send its reports when your browser's Do Not Track setting is enabled.
The browser sends the available referring-page address to our server; the analytics database keeps its domain. Our hosting service also processes request information, including IP addresses and browser details, to deliver the site.
Asking a question
The Pilot is a public submission tool. Questions and AI answers that pass automated publication checks can appear on the site and on share pages. Do not submit confidential information or personal information about yourself or anyone else.
Your question is sent through OpenRouter to AI providers for screening, suggested edits and answers. A question may reach a provider even if it is later rejected for publication. Automated checks can make mistakes.
We store your original and final question, the responses and summary, when the run occurred, response timing, model and provider details, and usage information. For abuse prevention and usage limits, we derive a daily identifier from your IP address and browser details. The application stores that identifier instead of the raw IP address in the run record. If you are signed in, runs can also be linked to your account across visits and days.
Accounts and voting
For accounts, we process your email address, account identifier, sign-in information, subscription choices and submission-notice acceptance records. Google sign-in, when selected, also involves Google and the account information it supplies to the authentication service. Your browser stores sign-in tokens to keep you signed in.
Votes are stored with the item identifier, vote direction, time and a code derived from your IP address and browser details that is specific to that item. Your browser stores vote selections so it can display them when you return.
Comments
Comments on studies are public. A comment appears with the name you choose and the date you posted it. Your email address is not shown. Do not include confidential information or personal information about yourself or anyone else. If you use Google sign-in, the name Google supplies is offered as a suggestion; you decide what is shown.
We store each comment with the page it was posted on, your account identifier, your chosen name, the time, whether it is shown, and a count of reports from other readers. A comment may be held for review before it appears. Deleting a comment removes it from the site; contact us to request deletion of the stored record. For limits on posting and reporting, we keep daily counters linked to your account or to the daily identifier described above. Your browser stores an unposted draft, and a note of the page to return you to after sign-in.
If you contact us, we receive your email address and message and use them to handle your request. Account settings also record your Field Notes subscription choice. Signing in does not itself opt you into Field Notes. You can change that choice in your account settings or contact us. Earlier mailing-list submissions may also be held; contact us to request their removal.
Who receives information
We use hosting, database, authentication and email providers to operate the site and handle accounts and messages. OpenRouter routes questions to AI providers. These services receive information needed for their respective functions and may process it in the United States or other countries.
When you choose Google sign-in or follow a social sharing link, that service may collect information and associate it with your activity over time and across sites, under its own privacy policy. See Google's privacy policy. Our page analytics does not use advertising pixels or identify you across other websites.
Public questions, answers, comments and share pages are available to other readers, who can copy or redistribute them. Removing content from this site does not remove copies held by others.
Retention and requests
Withdrawing a pilot from public access does not itself delete stored run information. Contact us to request deletion. Account-linked records, usage counters and votes need separate handling when a deletion request is made.
For a privacy request, email hello@machinecanon.com. Include enough information to locate the account or content, such as the account email or a page link. We may need to verify your request. Avoid sending identity documents unless they are needed and specifically requested.
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct or delete information, obtain a copy, or object to or restrict its use. You may also have the right to complain to your data protection authority. Requests are subject to applicable requirements and exceptions.
Changes
Updates will appear on this page with an effective date. Material changes will be identified here. Where required, we will provide additional notice or obtain permission before changing how information is used. This update does not authorize new uses of information collected under an earlier notice.
