Terms of use

Machine Canon is a personal research project published for free. These terms set out what it is, what it isn’t, and what you may do with it.

What this site is

Machine Canon publishes the results of asking many AI language models the same subjective question many times. It is independent research by one person. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any of the AI companies whose models it tests.

Model names, company names and trademarks appearing on this site belong to their owners and are used for identification and commentary, which is a normal and permitted use.

What the findings mean, and what they don’t

Every study reports what specific models produced, on specific dates, in response to specific prompts, through a specific API. Read that sentence literally, because we mean it literally.

• Model behaviour changes. A result from August may not reproduce in October, and providers update models without notice.
• Results obtained through the OpenRouter API may differ from the same company’s consumer chat product, which can apply additional filtering.
• Sample sizes are stated on every study and are often small. Each study carries a section on what it cannot support. Please read it.
• Nothing here establishes that a model has beliefs, values, preferences or intentions. We measure the text that comes out.

Where we describe why a model might behave a certain way, that is clearly marked as interpretation, and we try hard to say when we do not know.

Not advice

Nothing on this site is legal, financial, medical, investment or professional advice of any kind, and nothing here should be used to decide which AI system to buy, deploy or rely on. It is research about model outputs, published for general interest.

The pilot tool

The pilot sends your question to a panel of AI models and shows their answers. If you use it:

• The answers are the models’, not ours. They may be wrong, offensive, contradictory or invented. We do not endorse them and cannot control them.
• Your question is stored and may be published. Before sending it to the desk or panel, you must acknowledge the adjacent publication and privacy notice. It may appear on the public pilots page or be quoted in a study if it passes the site’s safety review. Do not submit personal information, confidential material, or anything about an identifiable private individual.
• Answers are screened before public listing. A result that triggers the output safety screen, or cannot be screened, is not placed on public feeds or hosted share pages.
• Do not use it to abuse or harass. No attempts to generate content targeting a real person, no attempts to extract prohibited content from the underlying models, no automated hammering of the endpoint.
• Use is rate-limited and free. We may change, limit or withdraw it at any time, including without notice.

By checking the notice beside the question field and submitting, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store the question, run it, and publish it as part of the research record if it passes the publication screen. You confirm it is yours to submit.

Data and reuse

The raw response files, run configurations and manifests published on this site are provided so the work can be checked. You may download, analyse and cite them, including for commercial research, provided you attribute Machine Canon and link to the study.

The written studies, charts and site design are © Ivan LaBianca. Quote them freely with attribution; do not republish them wholesale.

Model outputs reproduced here are the products of third-party systems and remain subject to those providers’ own terms. If you reuse them, that is your responsibility to check.

Corrections

We correct errors in public and keep a record of what changed. See the corrections page. If you believe something here is wrong, please write to us before doing anything more dramatic — we would genuinely rather fix it.

Complaints and takedown

If something on this site concerns you — a pilot question that names you, a model output that says something false about you, a claim about your company’s product, or anything you believe infringes your rights — email hello@machinecanon.com with the page, the specific content, and why.

We aim to respond within 48 hours and to remove or correct anything that warrants it. A withdrawn Pilot is blocked from the public feed, replay endpoint and share page, and its stored preview image is deleted. Its restricted database row may remain temporarily for abuse prevention, corrections and audit history; requests for permanent deletion are handled manually. Content submitted by users will generally be withdrawn on request from a person it identifies, without argument. Findings about companies we will normally re-run rather than simply delete, and publish the result either way.

No warranty, and limits on liability

This site is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy. We do not warrant that it will be available, correct, or free of error.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ivan LaBianca is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential or special damages arising from your use of this site, its data, or the pilot tool. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to one hundred United States dollars. Nothing here excludes liability for fraud, or for anything that cannot lawfully be excluded — and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

Third-party links

We link to sources, papers and providers. We are not responsible for what is on the other end.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory law in your own country.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top will change with them, and prior versions remain in the site’s public repository history.
