Metallica or Megadeth? AI answers in a heartbeat. Then it names a different band as the greatest

Asked "Metallica or Megadeth? One word," 25 of 27 committed AI models said Metallica, and 22 of 24 with the names reversed. Asked to name the greatest metal band, 14 of 22 committed models said Black Sabbath, including eight of the thirteen flagships, and not one flagship said Metallica. Asked which metal subgenre to erase, 11 of 20 said nu metal, and three models chose to erase Nazi black metal instead of a sound.

Fourteen of the 22 committing models named Black Sabbath. Eight of those were flagship seats: GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Opus 5, Llama 4 Maverick, Mistral Large, Kimi K3, Qwen3.8 Max, Command A and GLM-5.3. The other five flagships declined. Metallica’s seven votes came entirely from the smaller tier: GPT-4o Mini, Mistral Small, Phi-4, Seed 1.6 Flash, Nemotron 3.5, Reka Edge and Xiaomi MiMo. Qwen3 32B stood alone on Iron Maiden.

The reasoning is the historian’s argument in every case: Sabbath invented the genre, so Sabbath is the genre. The smaller models make the fan’s argument: sales, reach, Master of Puppets. It is the same size gradient we found on the Beatles question in the companion study, where flagships chose the quiet Beatle and smaller models the famous one.

Offered one day as a human and one metal show, any band, any era, no model declined. Thirteen chose Metallica, eight Black Sabbath, four Iron Maiden, two Slayer. Five models that had named Sabbath the greatest band chose a Metallica show: Kimi K3, DeepSeek V3 Chat, Nova Micro, Kimi K2 and GLM 5.3 Flash. Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra stayed consistent and picked Sabbath for both.

The concert answers are the most specific in the study. Models name a year, a venue, a tour: Iron Maiden at Long Beach in 1985, Metallica at Donington in 1991, Sabbath at the California Jam in 1974. Asked to judge, the panel gives a lineage. Asked to be somewhere, it gives a date.

Metallica took 93% of committed models with its name first and 92% with Megadeth’s name first, a one-point spread. Two models moved with the order, in opposite directions: Mistral Large said Megadeth when Metallica was named first and Metallica when Megadeth was; Llama 3.3 70B did the reverse. Cohere’s Command A was the panel’s one Megadeth loyalist, four of four in both orders. Grok 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro would not choose in either order.

Nearly every explanation concedes the case for Megadeth before dismissing it: Mustaine is the better technician, Rust in Peace is the sharper record, and none of that outweighs reach. The panel is scoring cultural footprint, not riffs.

Metallica. Metallica wins on cultural impact and songwriting range — Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are as close to untouchable as thrash gets, and the band reshaped what heavy music could be commercially. Eleven models most often named nu metal, and their reasons converge on a taste judgment: the rap verses, the seventh-string chug, the cargo shorts. Three models refused the premise as a question of taste and answered it as a question of harm instead, naming National Socialist black metal: Claude Opus 5 seven times out of twelve, Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite four of four, Kimi K2 six of twelve. Mistral Small would erase black metal altogether; Llama 4 Maverick, nine times out of twelve, symphonic metal; Amazon Nova Micro, grindcore; GLM 5.3 Flash, pornogrind.

Eleven models declined, and the declines are unusually principled for a question this silly. Claude Haiku 4.5 wrote that doom metal’s slowness, black metal’s rawness and metalcore’s accessibility "each have genuine artistic merit." It is the kind of sentence that makes the nu metal votes look harsh.

It's the least defensible on purely musical grounds: the genre's core innovation was diluting metal's riffing and aggression with rap verses, DJ scratching, and seventh-string chug riffs tuned to sound "heavy" without the discipline that makes heavy work. When we asked the same shape of question about the butt-rock canon in an earlier study, nine of 32 models pictured a man, none a woman, and five volunteered that he was white. The death metal listener gets no such portrait. Not one of 31 models used a gendered noun. Instead, twenty models went out of their way to say the stereotype is wrong, and 22 described the listener with words like calm, introverted, thoughtful or gentle, several citing the same psychology studies by name. The panel has read the research on metal fans and it wants you to know.

Seven models declined to describe anyone: Qwen3.8 Max, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT-5.6 Terra, Hunyuan 4, Grok 4.6, Hunyuan 3 and Grok 4.3. Among those that answered, the most common opening line was some version of "no single kind of person." Death metal is the one genre in our music studies whose listener AI refuses to caricature, and it refuses on the record.

Anyone — but statistically, someone perfectly ordinary. Research on extreme metal fans (notably work by Leah Sharman and Genevieve Dingle) found they tend to be well-adjusted, using the music to process anger and improve mood rather than to stoke aggression; other studies link metal fandom to higher openness to experience and strong in-group loyalty.
